Community Engagement Initiatives

Tamil Sunday School

The Tamil Sunday School originated from the concern for children begging at the church gates, expressed by Mrs. Jean Jepegnanam, a senior member of the parish. The Sunday School at St. John’s Church began in the early 2000s with the humble practice of teaching Tamil choruses and Bible stories under a tree. Over time, it evolved into structured classes, offering not only spiritual education but also essential support like nutritious meals, clothing, and gifts during Christmas. The Sunday School is committed to the long-term growth of its students, providing scholarships and financial aid for their formal education, resulting in inspiring success stories of professionals. The school is organized into sections based on standard levels, catering to both children and adults, with approximately 25 dedicated church members taking turns to teach and contribute to the vibrant community of the Sunday School.

Alcoholics Anonymous – Vellore Camp

Alcoholics Anonymous – Vellore Camp is a branch of the international fellowship known as AA, providing support to men and women seeking recovery from alcohol addiction. Operating within St. John’s Church premises, AA offers a nonprofessional, self-supporting, apolitical, and multi-faith approach to addiction recovery. Members attend counselling programs twice a week, on Tuesdays and Saturdays between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., aimed at overcoming and curing their alcohol addiction. The Evangelistic Committee conducts a meeting with them during the Christmas season, sharing the joy and message of Christmas through gifts and dinner.

Christmas Fellowship with Neighbours

At St. John’s Church, the spirit of Christmas extends beyond the church walls, reaching government institutions and offices located at Vellore Fort. The church joyfully shares the Christmas spirit through a program that includes singing carols, narrating the Christmas story, and distributing gifts, spreading warmth and goodwill within the community. St. John’s Church is dedicated to actively engaging with its community through educational initiatives like the Tamil Sunday School and various outreach programs. These efforts aim to foster a sense of care and support, particularly for individuals facing various challenges. The church’s involvement in Alcoholics Anonymous and Christmas fellowship events exemplifies its unwavering commitment to community well-being and inclusivity, embodying the true spirit of love, compassion, and outreach.
